Huckleberry’s Content License

Huckleberry is available for licensing through its System Reference Document (SRD), under the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY 4.0 license. The following is a guide for designers, writers, and publishers on how to use the SRD, along with the ins and outs of the Creative Commons license.

What are the rules?

Under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, you can:

  • Share. You’re free to share the SRD with anyone you’d like and even straight-up copy the text.

  • Adapt. You can remix, build on, or transform the rules in the SRD for any purpose, even commercially.

But you cannot:

  • Withhold credit. Using the SRD requires giving proper attribution (sample attribution is below) to Huckleberry and Steven Alexander. It must be clear that your game was built on our material.

  • State or imply that Huckleberry or Steven Alexander endorsed or sponsored you. (Unless we’ve made special arrangements with you first.) You also cannot use “Huckleberry” in the title of your product.

  • Use non-SRD material. Only the content and text in the SRD document is available to you. You may not use logos, artwork, setting details, NPCs, or anything else published outside of the SRD. If you want to explicitly set your product in the “Wyrd Frontier”, you need to arrange it with us first.

  • Apply any legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

What does attribution look like?

It’s pretty simple! All you need to do is add the following text to your copyright section or similarly visible place.

This work is based on Huckleberry: A Wyrd West RPG (found at http://www.HuckleberryRPG.com/), developed and authored by Steven Alexander, and licensed for our use under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).

Can I use the Huckleberry logo?

No, you may not use the Huckleberry logos or artwork without permission. However, we have created a special logo that is NOT included as part of the SRD. You can legally use the “Compatible with Huckleberry” logo if you include the following text:

Huckleberry: A Wyrd West RPG™ is a trademark of Steven Alexander. The Compatible with Huckleberry logo is © Steven Alexander, and is used with permission.

If I use the SRD, is my
game also CC-BY 4.0?

No, CC-BY 4.0 is not “viral”, meaning that anything you create is yours and yours alone. You do not need to make your content open. Of course, it’d be a lot cooler if you did!

Where can I get the SRD?

That sure would be handy to have, wouldn’t it? Download the PDF here.

Is there anything else?

That’s about it. As with any business endeavor, if you’re unsure about how any of this works, talk to a lawyer first.

And if you do create a product with Huckleberry’s SRD, we’d love to hear about it! Drop us a note (and maybe share some digital copies). If we like it, we’ll add a link to your product here on the website.

Thanks for riding with us, pardner!
